TVNPA ANNOUNCES TRI-VALLEY NONPROFIT FUND GRANT RECIPIENTS

Livermore, CA / August 15, 2022-

On July 26, 2022, the Tri-Valley Nonprofit Alliance welcomed 40 regional civic and nonprofit leaders at TVNPA’s CommonPoint Resource Center for a check presentation event honoring seven nonprofit recipients of the second round of the Tri-Valley Nonprofit Fund’s grant program.

Grants from the Tri-Valley Nonprofit Fund offer immediate, unrestricted funds to nonprofits that serve the Tri-Valley Area, including Livermore, Pleasanton, Sunol, Dublin, San Ramon and Danville. At the event, representatives from each of the nonprofit beneficiaries shared with the crowd the work they do and how the funds help them fulfill their missions.

In this second round, a total of $25,000 was awarded and as in the first round, the beneficiaries address a broad range of community needs and interests:

  • Partners for Change Tri-Valley – Childcare Program ($2,000)
  • Cheza Nami Foundation – Taste of Africa Festival ($2,500)
  • Livermore Filipino American Organization – Filipino Barrio Fiesta Event ($2,500)
  • East Bay Holocaust Education Center – Violins of Hope East Bay Program ($4,000)
  • Senior Support Program of the Tri-Valley – Mental Health Counseling Services ($4,000)
  • Set to Thrive – Thrive Bag Program ($5,000)
  • Tri-Valley Career Center – Jobs for the Future Project ($5,000)

“Beyond supporting nonprofits in our community, we have been learning about organizations we didn’t know existed or which are just starting out,” said TVNPA CEO Kathy Young. “However, we receive more applications than we can fund, so to keep the momentum going and retain and expand this level of giving, we continue to actively raising funds from the community.”

“The TVNF is a ‘community supporting community’ effort, and right now, donations and matching funds from our community are fueling our efforts,” Young continued, explaining that matching funds partners can curate their donation by specifying the amount of their contribution and the percentage of their match. The Community Health & Education Foundation (“CHEF”) and Marti and John Sutton are current matching funds sponsors, and have chosen to match donations at 150%.

Since matching funds can only be triggered when donations reach a certain level, contributions from the community, businesses and organizations determine the amount of money available for distribution each quarter.

According to TVNPA Board Chair Marti Sutton, “We’re grateful for the generosity of donors to date, and welcome contributions of any amount,” says TVNPA Board Chair Marti Sutton, “Current donations range from individuals donating $25 to matching partner contributions over $5,000. The more we raise, the more we can give.”

Grants are distributed quarterly and the third round is presently open until the end of this month, August, 31, 2022. The fourth round will open October 1 and run until November 31, 2022.

PRESS RELEASE – FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

GRAND OPENING AT TVNPA’S COMMONPOINT NONPROFIT CENTER IN LIVERMORE SET FOR JUNE 16, 2022

Livermore, CA / June 7, 2022-

On Thursday June 16th at 4:00 p.m., the Tri-Valley Nonprofit Alliance (TVNPA) will host a Grand Opening Ribbon Cutting Ceremony with the Livermore Chamber of Commerce at CommonPoint Nonprofit Center, a co-working space and community resource center in downtown Livermore, fulfilling a long-held vision by TVNPA Co-Founders Kathy Young and Mony Nop.

Open since March 1, 2022, CommonPoint is located at 164 North L Street and is already home to the offices of Quest Science Center, HERS Breast Cancer, Hively, Monthly Miracles, NAMI and Livermore Amador Symphony.  Also celebrating grand opening ribbon cuttings on June 16 will be HERS Breast Cancer, Hively, and NAMI.

CommonPoint serves as a physical extension of the programs and services TVNPA has developed to support and fuel the growth of the area’s nonprofit community for the past eight years.  The 2,900 square foot center offers flexible and fixed office space for start-up and established nonprofits available on a daily drop-in or long-term basis, as well as conference room facilities.

“Having a physical place for collaboration – not just with colleagues, but also those they serve – is important for nonprofits, particularly when they’re just getting started,” said TVNPA President & CEO Kathy Young. “Larger nonprofits not based in the Tri-Valley also benefit from having an office front closer to those they serve here.”

CommonPoint features dedicated offices, dedicated cubicles, shared workspaces, and ‘virtual offices’ for those who just want a physical address and use of the conference room. Amenities include secure WiFi, printer, conference room, kitchen, and a professional address. It is staffed by TVNPA employees and volunteers, and will host TVNPA trainings, educational sessions, and networking events.

“We wanted to establish a co-working space at a low cost so there are several set-ups to accommodate almost any budget,” says Young. “Eventually TVNPA plans to offer sponsorships for start-up nonprofits without budgets, as well as sponsor opportunities to reduce rent for all tenants.”

The Grand Opening will provide an opportunity for media to take photographs, tour the site, and speak with TVNPA leadership and the nonprofit organizations who share the space. Find out more by contacting Kathy Young at 925.699.7323 and kathy@tvnpa.org.

Tri-Valley Nonprofit Alliance Awards $25,000 in First Round of Tri-Valley Nonprofit Fund Grant Program

April 21, 2022

Earlier this month, TVNPA awarded a total of $25,000 in grants to seven nonprofits during the first cycle of the Tri-Valley Nonprofit Fund’s new grant program.

An overwhelming 46 organizations applied for funding, with a broad range of needs represented and extending from as far east as Livermore to as far north as Danville. The organizations awarded grants and their projects are:

  • Mom Relaunch- Scholarships for women in financial need who are re-entering the workforce for skills training and job readiness.
  • The Contra Costa Clubhouses- Outreach program for young adults at Putnam Clubhouse, a community for adults with mental illness offering support through employment, education and social connections.
  • Agape Villages Foster Family Agency- Funding enables 32 foster children to participate in Agape’s enrichment program.
  • SPARC- Two college-level apprentices for SPARC’s 2022 Livermore’s Shakespeare in the Vineyard summer season.
  • Narika- Outreach, advocacy and support and educational services in the Tri-Valley for domestic violence survivors.
  • Eviction Defense Fund- Assist low income Tri-Valley tenants in creating individual housing stabilization plans and navigating the rental assistance process.
  • Paws in Need – Support for the spay/neuter program.

The applications were evaluated by a committee led by incoming TVNPA Board Chair Marti Sutton. “We were in awe of the caliber of grant applications we received,” said TVNPA CEO Kathy Young. “While we were glad to support seven amazing organizations in this first cycle, the sheer number of applications indicates a tremendous number of organizations can benefit from immediate, unrestricted support.”

The grant program is set up on a matching funds model and currently contributions are matched 150%, thanks to the generosity of matching funds partners Community Health and Education Foundation “CHEF” and Marti & John Sutton. Since matching funds can only be triggered when donations reach a certain level, contributions from the community, businesses and organizations determine the amount of money available for distribution each quarter.

“We are continuing to actively raise funds so we can offer as many grants as possible,” explained Young, “There are clearly a lot of different services and programs that can benefit from immediate unrestricted funding and we’re excited to fill this funding niche for the Tri-Valley.”

The new grant application for the second quarterly cycle of 2022 opened April 1 and will close May 31. Dates for upcoming cycles are July 1 – August 31 for Q3;  and October 1  – November 31 for Q4.

Tri-Valley Nonprofit Alliance Opens Doors at CommonPoint: A Co-Working Space and Community Resource Center

Livermore, CA / March 15, 2022-

Fulfilling a long-held vision by TVNPA Co-Founders Kathy Young and Mony Nop, the Tri-Valley Nonprofit Alliance opened the doors of CommonPoint Nonprofit Center, a co-working space and community resource center, in downtown Livermore on March 1, 2022.

Located at 116 North L Street, CommonPoint serves as a physical extension of the programs and services TVNPA has developed to support and fuel the growth of the area’s nonprofit community for the past eight years.  The 2,900 square foot center offers flexible and fixed office space for start-up and established nonprofits available on a daily drop-in or long-term basis, as well as conference room facilities.

Though Mony Nop termed off of the TVNPA board a few years ago, he remains involved and took an active role in the development of the space, sourcing furniture and personally funding and coordinating tenant improvements. He also joined building owner Alan Burnham as one of the center’s first donors, matching Burnham’s $10,000 donation with a check presentation at the event.

“This co-working space for nonprofits is such a wonderful resource for our community,” said Nop. “Kathy and I spoke about this nonprofit collaboration center when we first met in an elevator eight years ago. Now that it is coming to fruition, you can’t help but support it. Together, our community will thrive.”

“Having a physical place for collaboration – not just with collegues, but also those they serve – is important for nonprofits, particularly when they’re just getting started,” added TVNPA President & CEO Kathy Young. “Larger nonprofits not based in the Tri-Valley also benefit from having an officefront closer to those they serve here.”

CommonPoint features dedicated offices, dedicated cubicles, shared workspaces and ‘virtual offices’ for those who just want a physical address and use of the conference room. Amenities include secure WiFi, printer, conference room, kitchen, and a professional address. It is staffed by TVNPA employees and volunteers, and will host TVNPA trainings, educational sessions, and networking events. Hively, Quest Science Center and the HERS Breast Cancer Foundation have already committed to leasing space at CommonPoint and Young talks daily with other interested organizations.

Office, co-working space and conference room rental opportunities are now available and can be tailored to your individual needs. Find out more and arrange a tour of CommonPoint by contacting Kathy Young at 925.699.7323 and kathy@tvnpa.org.

TVNPA Announces Fremont bank Grant Award to Enhance Nonprofit Security

Livermore, CA / March 2, 2023

The Tri-Valley Nonprofit Alliance (TVNPA) is pleased to announce that Fremont Bank Foundation has awarded a $21,000 grant to improve security at the CommonPoint Nonprofit Center.

Centrally located in Downtown Livermore, the CommonPoint Nonprofit Center offers a variety of work spaces to suit nonprofit needs, large or small. From private offices to individual cubicle and shared desk plans to a virtual address and meeting rooms, this fully-equipped space has everything a nonprofit needs to operate. CPNC is a wonderful cost-effective solution ensuring organizations spend less money on overhead and more on service delivery.

Currently, CPNC hosts 15 nonprofits with plans to scale to serve 30 nonprofits in the next year. With each organization utilizing space at CPNC having their own staff, clients, board members and volunteers and individual hours of operation, this requires 24-hour access to the building. Managing access and maintaining building security is top priority as nonprofits often have program supplies, equipment, and sensitive client data.

Fremont Bank Foundation generously granted TVNPA with a $21,000 grant to purchase comprehensive security for the building to improve onsite safety for the nonprofits. Their substantial support has given staff and volunteers peace of mind, and it has encouraged several nonprofits to consider space at the CommonPoint Nonprofit Center.

“Fremont Bank recognizes the importance of having cutting edge security systems in place to secure property and private data,” says John Gilmore, Sr. Director, Security at Fremont Bank.   “Nonprofits are doing amazing work in the Tri-Valley to provide services for health care, food, shelter and other community needs. We are honored to help them get the security they need to keep their operations secure.”

“Having a robust security system, window tinting and lockers for each organization at the CommonPoint Nonprofit Center has greatly improved safety. These enhancements will be a huge draw for new nonprofits interested in using in this space.” Kathy Young, CEO

TRI-VALLEY NONPROFIT ALLIANCE ANNOUNCES ‘TOP PERFORMING BOARDS’ CERTIFICATE PROGRAM FOR JANUARY 2023

Livermore, CA / December 19, 2022-

Looking for an opportunity to boost your board in 2023?

The Tri-Valley Nonprofit Alliance (TVNPA) announced today it will start the new year offering a new certificate program entitled ‘Top Performing Boards’ through The Philanthropy Institute next month.

‘Top Performing Boards’ is a board development program comprised of three (3) 75-minute sessions held remotely via Zoom on consecutive Tuesdays in January, 2023. Participants may take any session individually or take all three to earn a Certificate of Completion. Registration is now open at https://tvnpa.org/programs/the-philanthropy-institute-2023/.

The Philanthropy Institute is a program of TVNPA in partnership with Las Positas College. ‘Top Performing Boards’ will introduce current policies, practices and strategies of contemporary nonprofit boards of directors. It is designed for seasoned and newer board members, executive directors, and anyone interested in serving on a nonprofit board, and is appropriate for emerging and established organizations located anywhere within the United States and Canada.

“Since the Philanthropy Institute opened our doors two years ago, interest has steadily grown. We have welcomed participants from 47 states and D.C. this year alone,” said Kathy Young, TVNPA President & CEO. “Given the degree of interest, ‘Top Performing Boards’ is a timely addition to our program offerings.”

Facilitated by regional and national leaders in the nonprofit professional and educational fields, the sessions offered are:

Session I: “‘All Aboard:’ Concepts in Board Design,” with Dr. Lydia Hughes-Evans January 17, 2023

Session II: “Running Impactful and Inclusive Board Meetings,” with Dr. Renee Ruben-Ross January 24, 2023

Session III: “Board Business Matters for the 21st Century: In Conversation,” with Jane Scaccetti, Of Counsel with Armanino LLC, and Carolyn Siegfried, The Pedrozzi Foundation
January 31, 2023

While all three sessions offer tools that can be implemented immediately, earning a Certificate of Completion demonstrates commitment as an engaged board member; provides a range of tools for building strong boards and elevating existing boards; and positions organizations as attractive grant funding candidates.

Tri-Valley Nonprofit Alliance Launches Tri-Valley Nonprofit Fund Grant Program with 150% Matching Funds Opportunity

Livermore, CA | February 1, 2022

On the heels of the Tri-Valley Nonprofit Fund’s first successful campaign for COVID relief, TVNPA launched the Tri-Valley Nonprofit Fund Grant Program this month, a quarterly grant program offering unrestricted funds to support nonprofit organizations serving the Tri-Valley communities of Dublin, Livermore, Pleasanton, San Ramon, Danville and Sunol.

And thanks to matching partners Community Health and Education Foundation (CHEF) and Marti and John Sutton, the first $25,000 in individual donations will be matched by 150%.

The grant program was announced at TVNPA’s inaugural “Power of Giving” event at the Bankhead Theater this past December, where benefactors and beneficiaries of the TVNF’s first campaign were recognized for their collective resiliency and successful efforts to meet the needs of Tri-Valley residents impacted by the Covid-19 pandemic.

Grant Program Overview

The first quarterly application cycle is now open and closes on February 22, 2022. Nonprofits serving the Tri- Valley that are registered as 501(c)3 organizations or have a fiscal sponsor are eligible to apply for grants of between $1,000 – $5,000 in unrestricted funds. Distributions will take place quarterly and as with the first campaign, grant funds are unrestricted, meaning they can be used for operational purposes as well as for program and service delivery. The application can be found online at www.tvnpa.org/tvnf.

“The lack of operational funding sources for nonprofits became immediately apparent during the early days of the pandemic as nonprofits lost their ability to fundraise – their primary method for procuring operating funds. In fact, that gap and immediate need inspired the first campaign,” explained Kathy Young, TVNPA President &

CEO. “Through it, we saw the impact of unrestricted funding was immediate and measurable, which has inspired us to expand the fund and provide this type of ongoing support to even more nonprofits in the region.”

Matching Funds & Ongoing Donations

As with the first campaign, the impact of the TVNF Grant Program is bolstered by a matching funds component, and TVNPA is excited to partner once again with CHEF, who will manage that portion of the program.

Funds from matching partners can only be used when funding is raised from other entities to make the match. Donors can curate their donations in several ways: making a one-time contribution at any time; scheduling recurring contributions; and/or becoming a matching funds partner for one quarter, several quarters, or annually.

Donors also can choose what type of organization their contributions benefits: Direct Service Organizations, Arts & Science Organizations; or any kind of organization. Donations can be made anytime online at www.tvnpa.org/tvnf.

TVNPA has been the regional convener for nonprofit organizations serving the Tri-Valley since 2014 and Carolyn Siegfried, TVNPA Board Chair, shared her excitement for the grant program as a logical next step and natural extension of the organization’s mission.

“In addition to connecting, supporting and advocating for our nonprofit community, TVNPA has over time become an incubator for nonprofit start-ups who find value in our educational and informational workshops, regional networking meetings, and mentoring opportunities,” said Siegfried. “With the support of individual donors, community groups, foundations and businesses, our entire nonprofit community is now set to become even stronger and more responsive to our region’s needs.”

Tri-Valley Nonprofit Fund Completes Third Round of Fundraising

Group has now generated $183,000 to benefit local organizations

Livermore, CA: July 06, 2021

One year after its initial launch, the Tri-Valley Nonprofit Fund for Covid Relief (TVNF) has completed its third round of funding thanks in part to support from the Rotary Club of Livermore and Workday, bringing its total amount of contributions up to $183,000.

TVNF was able to distribute its third round of funding — worth $63,000 — to its nonprofit beneficiaries as a result of various community donations, which will be used to benefit residents adversely affected by the coronavirus pandemic.

“Raising funds during a pandemic seemed an insurmountable task, but community members and organizations were motivated by the immediate doubling mechanism, allowing for significant, immediate impacts no matter the size of a contribution,” said Pleasanton Human Services Commissioner Susan Hayes, who co-founded the fund with Tri-Valley Nonprofit Alliance CEO Kathy Young.

The most recent surge of funding was provided by the members of the Rotary Club of Livermore, who donated $9,300 in April as a part of the TVNF Workday Challenge — which featured Workday offering matching donations.

The motivation of matching funds was a consistent theme during the past year, according to Hayes.

“It has been unbelievable to see the community rally around the organizations serving our most vulnerable populations even as their own businesses and personal lives were being impacted by COVID-19,” Hayes said.

Geared toward supporting local residents and groups, the six designated beneficiary organizations for the fund are Axis Community Health, CityServe of the Tri-Valley, Open Heart Kitchen, Senior Support Services of the Tri-Valley, Spectrum Community Services (Meals on Wheels) and Tri-Valley Haven.

Lara Calvert, executive director at Spectrum Community Services, said in a statement that this donation came just in time, as funds were running dry despite a need for their services still being present.

“Last year we served 5,701 meals, so with all three donations, the TVNF funded one full month worth of meals,” Calvert said. “We are still serving 280 meals per month, but will run out of government funds at the end of May.”

Livermore Rotary President Carolyn Siegfried added that their contributions were proposed by former club president Jay Davis and club treasurer Glenn Kubiack, who invited club members to donate what they would have spent on weekly lunches during club meetings.

“Our board of directors voted to support the Tri-Valley Nonprofit Fund for two reasons: the beneficiaries were on the front lines supporting the people we wanted to help, and our funds would be generously matched by the Workday Foundation, doubling our impact,” Siegfried said.

Other groups who have contributed to the fund over the past year include CHEF, Hacienda Helping Hands, John & Marti Sutton, Mony Nop Real Estate Team, Congregation Beth Emek, Gene Morgan Insurance, Holy Cross Lutheran Church, Jean King, Local SEO Guide and St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Community.

Young says the TVNPA is exploring ways to expand the fund’s reach, with potential outreach opportunities including making grants available for member organizations and supporting groups with immediate needs.

TRI-VALLEY NONPROFIT FUND ANNOUNCES $60,000 SECOND DISTRIBUTION AND LAUNCHES “WORKDAY” THIRD ROUND

Livermore, CA / August 7, 2020

Earlier this month, the Tri-Valley Nonprofit Fund (TVNF), established April 24, 2020, reached its second round funding goal, distributing another $10,000 each in unrestricted funds to its six designated beneficiaries supporting residents in the Tri-Valley area adversely impacted by COVID-19.

The beneficiary organizations are:

  • Axis Community Health
  • CityServe of the Tri-Valley
  • Open Heart Kitchen
  • Senior Support Services of the Tri-Valley
  • Spectrum Community Services (Meals on Wheels)
  • Tri-Valley Haven

The $60,000 second round goal was achieved through the fund’s matching program, which reached $30,000 in community contributions in just over one month, and $30,000 from matching partners. Total distributions to date from the Tri-Valley Nonprofit Fund have now reached $120,000 in its first four months.

The matching fund partners for the second round were Marti and John Sutton, St. Charles Borromeo Church, Gene Morgan Insurance Agency and Mony Nop Real Estate. Community donations included significant contributions from the East Bay Community Foundation and Community Leader Jean King.

“Our matching funds partners are critical to supporting these six safety-net service providers,” says Kathy Young, CEO of the Tri-Valley Nonprofit Alliance (TVNPA). “They enable us to immediately double each donation, and ‘donation-doubling’ has been the key to this collaborative effort.”

Community members are motivated to support neighbors, Young explains, but many are understandably limited in how much they can contribute right now. The immediate doubling mechanism allows for significant impacts, no matter how small the community contribution.

How does donation-doubling work? A contribution of as little as $10 when doubled with equal funds from a matching program partner purchases a $20 bag of groceries for a family in need; a $25 donation when doubled buys a $50 tank of gas for a family living in a vehicle. Other examples include:

  • $33 donation (doubled via match to $66) purchases a home-based pulse oximeter for patients with heart disease or COVID-19
  • $50 donation (doubled to $100) can either purchase a home blood pressure cuff, or 50 hot meals, or 24-hours of safe & secure housing for a family of four
  • $125 donation (doubled to $250) sponsors one child’s weekend bag lunch program for one year
  • $150 donation (doubled to $300) covers one month of electricity for a senior citizen
  • $250 donation (doubled to $500) purchases bag lunch meals for 200 children
  • $500 donation (doubled to $1,000) covers the down payment for a below-market apartment for a displaced family

Third Round Launches with Exclusive Workday Donation

The TVNF is excited to announce that the Workday Foundation has stepped up as the exclusive matching partner for the third round of the Tri-Valley Nonprofit Fund’s COVID-19 Campaign, with a $30,000 unrestricted matching funds challenge for the community.
“Workday has created initiatives to support the communities where its employees work and live, and the Tri-Valley has benefitted from the company’s generosity for many years,” says Susan Hayes, Consultant to the Tri-Valley Nonprofit Fund. “We couldn’t be more grateful for Workday’s support of our community during this time, helping our residents who have been adversely impacted by COVID-19.”

The Workday Foundation also funded operational costs towards facilitation of the fund. “Like any business, nonprofit efforts such as the TVNF cost money to operate,” says Young. “We had no idea the fund would gain momentum as quickly as it has, and Workday’s support of our efforts to drive a community effort during a pandemic is a testament to its active participation in the community.

Carrie Varoquiers, Vice President of Global Impact and Employee Life at Workday and President of the Workday Foundation, reiterated Workday’s commitment to its communities: “Supporting the needs of our communities is more important than ever, including those who have been adversely impacted by COVID-19,” says Varoquiers. “We are grateful for the opportunity to support the Tri-Valley Nonprofit Fund, which aids service providers that are helping keep families healthy, fed and in their homes – which aligns with our goal to help break the cycle of poverty, and transform lives.”
Community Challenge for Workday Round

With the Workday round now under way, individuals and community organizations are already planning fundraisers, including a donation drive hosted by Inklings Coffee & Tea in Pleasanton. Inklings will collect funds through the month of August to donate to the Tri-Valley Nonprofit Fund and every dollar donated will automatically be doubled with funds contributed by Workday. It’s a great opportunity to support a small business and the community through paying it forward!

Other ways the community can participate include:

1) Make a donation of any amount directly through the TVNPA website at http://tvnpa.org/tvnf and at www.ChefGivingCommunity.org/tvnf

2) Host an online fundraiser with your service group, friends and classmates. Feel free to reach out to Kathy Young for further information or ideas.

TRI-VALLEY NONPROFIT FUND ANNOUNCES FIRST DISTRIBUTION AND LAUNCHES SECOND ROUND DONATION DRIVE

Livermore, CA / June 10, 2020

After just a few months in operation, the Tri-Valley Nonprofit Fund announced today its first distribution of $60,000 and the launch of its “Round Two” donation drive. A campaign of the Tri-Valley Nonprofit Alliance, the TVNF’s initial distribution is comprised of $30,000 from community donations and $30,000 from the Matching Funds Program, much of which was raised in the first 30 days.

Round One Distribution Recap

The $60,000 was distributed the first week of June in increments of $10,000 in unrestricted funds to each of the six beneficiaries. Moving forward, the TVNF plans to replicate the pattern in each round when funds allow.

“Offering unrestricted funds was critical to meet the needs of these front-line organizations, since scaling services is just one part of the equation,” says Susan Hayes, fund consultant to the TVNPA. “Unrestricted funds allow organizations to scale their operations and delivery systems as well, so services and resources reach their intended audiences in a timely manner. That’s where the real impact occurs.”

The organizations are:

  • Axis Community Health
  • CityServe of the Tri-Valley
  • Open Heart Kitchen
  • Senior Support Services of the Tri-Valley
  • Spectrum Community Services (Meals on Wheels)
  • Tri-Valley Haven

Round One Matching Funds Partners

The generosity of two local organizations funded the $30,000 Matching Fund Program for this initial round, beginning with the Community Health & Education Foundation “CHEF,” with their $20,000 seed donation.

“CHEF is happy to partner with TVNPA in our ongoing mission to foster a community of giving,” says CHEF Executive Director Maria Mancini. “This fund embodies the inspiration behind CHEF, so it has been exciting to be part of its founding.”

Hacienda Helping Hands, the ongoing community support campaign of Hacienda Business Park, also came forward with a generous contribution of $10,000 for this first round.
“We are inspired by the vision of the Tri-Valley Nonprofit Alliance and hope that others will likewise see this as an opportunity to make a large local impact through collective participation,” says James Paxson, Hacienda’s General Manager. “The region is fortunate to have organizations like the Tri-Valley Nonprofit Alliance who are attempting to comprehensively address the full spectrum of community need.”

Community donations have been strong since the outset, according to Kathy Young, CEO of TVNPA, who reports that the community side of the fund raised $20,000 in the first two weeks, and by the end of the first month, had surpassed $30,000. “We know COVID-19 has impacted everyone in our region to some extent,” Young says. “It’s comforting to know the idea of ‘wrapping a blanket of services’ around the shoulders of our neighbors most impacted has really resonated.”

Contributions to the matching funds program have also been robust, with commitments now exceeding $90,000. “The support of local businesses and organizations has been incredible, enabling the fund to reach its first-round distribution quickly and position us to immediately launch the second round,” explains Young.

Donation Drive “Round Two” Launches

The TVNF’s “Round Two” donation drive launches immediately, thanks in great part to the generosity of local residents John and Marti Sutton, with their matching funds contribution of $25,000. John, CFO of The Wine Group, and Marti, Past Co-Chair of the Las Positas College Foundation Board of Directors, are long-time philanthropists in the Tri-Valley.

“We wanted to make a contribution to the Tri-Valley Nonprofit Fund that would encourage others to give at this time while supporting the incredible organizations in or community that provide valuable services to our residents,” says Marti Sutton.

Completing the second round’s matching fund partnership is the Mony Nop Real Estate Team ($1,000), Gene Morgan Insurance ($1,000), Holy Cross Lutheran Church (1,000), and St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Community ($2500).

“Each round of funding is just as important as the first round,” according to Hayes. “We know residents will continue to face economic challenges for months to come, even as our communities start to reopen. As a result, our beneficiaries will need financial support to maintain and extend services at the elevated levels they’re currently experiencing.”

The community can contribute in several ways:

1) Make a donation of any amount directly through the TVNPA website at http://tvnpa.org/tvnf and at www.ChefGivingCommunity.org/tvnf

2) Host an online fundraiser with your service group, friends and classmates. Feel free to reach out to Kathy Young for further information or ideas.

3) Become a Matching Funds Program Partner, open to businesses and organizations for a minimum donation of $1,000. For information, contact TVNPA CEO Kathy Young at 925-699-7323 or kathy@tvnpa.org

TRI-VALLEY NONPROFIT FUND LAUNCHED TO COMBAT COMMUNITY IMPACTS OF COVID-19

Livermore, CA / April 24, 2020

The Tri-Valley Nonprofit Alliance (“TVNPA”), the regional convener for Tri-Valley nonprofit organizations, launched the Tri-Valley Nonprofit Fund this week to help stabilize six area nonprofit “safety net” service providers responding on the front lines of the COVID-19 pandemic.

These nonprofit organizations were identified by the cities of Dublin, Livermore and Pleasanton as critical safety net providers best positioned to respond community-wide to the medical and economic impacts of the crisis being felt in the Tri-Valley communities located in Alameda and Contra Costa Counties. They are:

  • Axis Community Health
  • CityServe of the Tri-Valley
  • Open Heart Kitchen
  • Senior Support Services of the Tri-Valley
  • Spectrum Community Services (Meals for Wheels)
  • Tri-Valley Haven

“Safety net” organizations meet the basic needs of vulnerable community members, including children, senior citizens, families, homeless, veterans, the disabled, unemployed, underemployed and those who live paycheck-to-paycheck. They provide food, clothing, shelter, safe housing, dental and medical care, behavioral health services, and more.
According to Becky Hopkins, Assistant to the City Manager for the City of Pleasanton, “These organizations have worked for decades to meet the basic needs of vulnerable residents in all our Tri-Valley communities. Their well-developed programs, broad reach, service delivery processes and resource networks have positioned them to scale quickly in response to the growing needs of our region.”

Unfortunately, at the same time the need for support and services is rapidly increasing, nonprofit funding is markedly decreasing. According to Kathy Young, CEO of the TVNPA, decreased funding may jeopardize the ability of these nonprofits to fulfill their missions at a time when they are needed most, and that’s why launching the Tri-Valley Nonprofit Fund right now made sense.

Our nonprofits are being asked to deliver on their missions at a rate and scale never seen before,” Young explained. “While It is understandably necessary to cancel annual fundraiser gatherings they rely on for support, we needed to find a solution to fill the funding gap quickly.”

Young continued, “These six organizations comprise the foundation of our safety net service delivery system throughout the Tri-Valley. If any one of them disappears, there are currently no other organizations large enough to fill the gap.”

TVNPA has engaged Susan Hayes, a nonprofit consultant and Human Services Commissioner for the City of Pleasanton, to join Young in fund development and strategic outreach efforts. Community Health & Education Foundation (“CHEF”) has also stepped in, acting as the fund’s Donation Management Partner. CHEF will manage the online donation infrastructure and has generously waived all costs associated with that role. Additionally, CHEF has seeded the matching funds program with $20,000.

“Thanks to CHEF, 100% of donation dollars received will go directly to the six organizations, and the impact of each donation up to $20,000 will be immediately doubled,” said Young. “We are actively talking with additional businesses and organizations about joining the Matching Funds Program as well.”

Funds will be distributed equally among the organizations and are unrestricted for use in mitigating the impacts of COVID-19 on their organizations. The ultimate goal is to help avoid interruptions and decreases in service delivery to community members during this crisis and the economic recovery that will follow.

Donating to the Tri-Valley Nonprofit Fund is a win-win for donors, beneficiaries and the entire community. There are three ways to get involved:

1) Direct donations are being accepted online through the TVNPA website at www.TVNPA.org/tvnf and at www.ChefGivingCommunity.org/tvnf

2) Community groups are hosting online fundraisers for the TVNF, such as concerts and “mask-a-thons.” Contact Michael d’Ambrosio of “Tri-Valley Community Help During Shelter in Place” at michaeldambrosio5@gmail.com and Evan Branning of “Unify Livermore” at unifylivermore@gmail.com to find out more about community involvement.

TVNPA Supports Regional Nonprofit Organizations with online resources during COVID-19 Crisis

Brushy Peak, North Livermore, March 2020
Brushy Peak, North Livermore, March 2020

We are intensely grateful that we had the opportunity to see many of you at our lively February program featuring Rick Altman. Little did we know at that time that the spread and scope of the COVID-19 virus would so swiftly and seriously impact our everyday lives, both at work and at home. Our outlook mid-March is vastly different than the last time we gathered at the Bankhead Theater, but at TVNPA we are laser-focused on how critically important our connections are to one another and, going forward, how to maintain those connections between each of our organizations.

Six years ago this March, TVNPA formed around the core value of “together, we are better.” As your regional nonprofit alliance, we know that the investment in educating people, providing resources and forging connections with one another throughout our nonprofit community will already have helped to build resilience in recovery efforts down the road. As we all work to rebuild the lost momentum and postponed opportunities we are experiencing now, we invite you to participate in our Facebook and LinkedIn Groups and to follow us on Twitter, if you are not already doing so.

Since TVNPA began this grand adventure of building a strong coalition within the nonprofit community in the Tri-Valley and beyond, we are continually amazed and inspired by the leadership, creativity and collaboration between hundreds of local organizations and their people; from board directors, staff members and volunteers, to the business community and independent contractors who aid in making the nonprofit world go around. In short, you are our rock stars!

In the spirit of TVNPA’s mission to serve organizations with resources and education, we have collected information that we feel will be useful to organizations. TVNPA has turned to our trusted partner organizations for reliable and trustworthy information and trainings on best practices during the COVID-19 period. Please see TVNPA’s Resource Guide below in the email, or navigate to our website.

To all of you who work, support and volunteer in the nonprofit social, environmental, health and arts sectors, we encourage you to reach out to each other and to us at TVNPA during this unprecedented test of circumstances. We know that this situation is causing interruptions of all sorts and is resulting in much stress and disruption to all that we have worked hard to build and implement over time. TVNPA remains committed to being a central resource and forum for exploring innovative ways to support and educate the nonprofit community in the region. Nonprofit organizations have always been the hardest working, most innovative, and creatively inspiring core of our society and we are proud to serve alongside you.

The Taylor Family Foundation

The Taylor Family Foundation offers an incomparable opportunity to children and their families by providing therapeutic recreation, specialized support and resources. Located on 138 acres of beautiful land nestled in Livermore, CA, TTFF’s camp hosts a racially and socio-economically diverse group of 3,000 campers with chronic medical, developmental disabilities and youth at-risk for over 30 camp sessions throughout the year—at no charge.

“A 12 year old HIV/Aids female patient was being treated through Medical.  She lived within a family who had a number of foster children.  She had a cleft palate since birth and could barely enunciate words and swallow food correctly.  The state would not authorize her palate to be fixed because in their words, “she would not live long enough to benefit from the positive outcome of surgery.”  She was bullied within school, extremely insecure about her looks and ability to speak clearly and extremely withdrawn due to the lack of social interaction.  When we heard of this situation TTFF stepped in to pay for her surgery and post surgery speech and swallowing therapies.  This preteen went on to graduate high school with high marks, was in a number of academic school clubs and belonged to social clubs as well.  She became a public speaker and champion for teens living with AIDS.  She married after high school, had 2 children both of who were not infected with the HIV virus and fulfilled many of her personal dreams.  She had a huge impact on the teen HIV community.  Public speaking and personally becoming a role model for HIV/Aids infected youth created her legacy.  I am sure this would not have happened if her small birth defect (yet large in impact) had not been fixed.

She died in her late 20’s but lived what was her dream life.”

HERS Breast Cancer Foundation

HERS Breast Cancer Foundation is now in it’s 20th year of providing support to breast cancer survivors in the Tri-Cities and Tri-Valley communities and beyond. They operate two Program Stores,  at Washington Hospital West in Fremont and our store at Stanford ValleyCare in Pleasanton. To learn more about this amazing Foundation watch the video below.

Livermore Lab Foundation shares about some of their accomplishments.

Livermore Lab Foundation is proud to offer the LLF Supported High School Internship program at LLF with great sucess.

Livermore Lab Foundation coordinated with the principals at Livermore’s public high schools — Del Valle, Granada, and Livermore — to select students (two per school) to participate in a pilot LLF-supported STEM internship program at LLNL. The six young interns worked at the Lab for one month this summer, did intensive training on software and lab equipment that LLNL scientists and engineers utilize in their work, had daily lunch discussions with scientists and LLNL college interns, and joined a number of behind-the-scenes tours of the one-square-mile Lab. They did collaborative work on project teams (two interns per team + LLNL mentors), tackling real-life scientific and tech problems (in additive manufacturing [i.e., 3D printing], bioengineering, and micro/ nanotechnology) and used cool lab equipment. Several of their prototypes were even approved for use in real-life applications by the end of the program! The program concluded with a scientific poster presentation and celebration. LLF was honored to surprise each of these hardworking students with a college scholarship. This hands-on intro to work at a national lab is a rare opportunity for such young prospective scientists and engineers.

The Foundation was pleased to support two outstanding students from Florida A&M University (FAMU) who interned at Lawrence Livermore National Lab last summer.

LLNL has a history of scientific collaboration with FAMU, which is the nation’s only historically black university to offer both a PhD in Physics and a concentration in High Energy Density Physics — a field that is fundamental to much of the national defense and basic science work done at the Lab. This summer, Livermore Lab Foundation (LLF) was able to help support a FAMU grad student and postdoc conducting research at the Lab. Because it’s a long way from Florida to California and the cost of living in California (especially the San Francisco Bay Area!) is so high, the Foundation provided funds for the young scientists’ travel and housing. This funding enabled the students to spend their summer here in Livermore while interning at one of the largest national labs / federal research facilities in the country. It’s been exciting to hear of the FAMU interns’ experiences at the Lab and the interesting scientific research they are pursuing.

The Foundation is excited about exploring new partnerships, expanding scientific research, and promoting educational opportunities that open the doors to the future.

TVNPA Members Making a Difference

Down Syndrome Connection of the Bay Area

When Cathleen Small gave birth to her son Sam in 2012, she didn’t know where to turn. Sam was born with Down syndrome, about which Cathleen knew nothing. An internet search connected her to the Down Syndrome Connection of the Bay Area (DSCBA), a TVNPA member organization, and changed her life.

Cathleen remembers her first DSCBA support meeting, which she attended when Sam was three weeks old, as “the moment I first felt that everything was going to be okay…that Down syndrome wasn’t going to rule our lives.”

Cathleen and Sam began attending monthly support group meetings, where Cathleen connected with fellow parents. Now age seven, Sam has completed two summers in DSCBA’s Communication Readiness Program and attends weekly Peer Development classes.

In 2015, Cathleen became DSCBA’s Medical Outreach Alliance Director, which has enabled her to support parents and medical practitioners with compassion, information, and resources. “It’s vitally important to introduce new parents to the services that DSCBA offers.”

Established in 1998, DSCBA’s mission is to empower, inspire and support people with Down syndrome, their families and the community that serves them, while fostering awareness and acceptance in all areas of life. To fulfill that mission, DSCBA offers numerous services including family connection meetings, peer development classes, music therapy, a summer communication readiness program and a strong alliance program with Bay Area schools and medical facilities. DSCBA serves more than 1,000 families.

Pedrozzi Foundation Supports Livermore Students

TVNPA strengthens nonprofits through seminars, collaborative discussions, networking opportunities and engaging community events.

One of TVNPA’s amazing founding members is The Pedrozzi Foundation.
The Pedrozzi Foundation provides college and vocational scholarships and resources to Livermore students. The foundation believes that all students deserve the chance to pursue educational and career goals and that the lack of finances or information should never be a barrier. Pedrozzi creates an impact by sponsoring the PSAT for all students of the Livermore high schools, granting college scholarships and providing families with college and career assistance.

Livermore Valley Performing Arts Center is the Heart of a Vibrant Cultural Arts Community

Livermore Valley Performing Arts Center is an independent, 501(c)3, non-profit organization that operates three spaces: the Bankhead Theater, the Bothwell Arts Center and Downtown Art Studios. The mission of LVPAC is to offer a broad range of arts opportunities and experiences to engage our diverse community. LVPAC’s vision: Become the heart of a vibrant cultural arts community.

Bothwell Arts Center

The Bothwell Arts Center serves as an incubator for the Tri-Valley’s vibrant arts community providing a nurturing environment for artists, performers, and cultural arts organizations to create and grow. In 2006, the Bothwell Arts Center opened offering workspaces that foster interaction and a rich exchange of creative ideas. Each October, LVPAC’s Artwalk blankets downtown Livermore with exhibits by artists ranging from long-time professionals to emerging artisans in every medium.

For artists, regardless of their level, access to affordable space, and the support and freedom to explore and expand their creativity is essential. The Bothwell provides “a place where art happens.” Rental studios, as well as space for classes, workshops, rehearsals, displays, and events provide working room for teachers to share their skills in areas from perspective drawing and watercolor painting, to music lessons and improv. The large room at the Bothwell allows performing arts groups space for rehearsals and performances. Space to nurture the arts benefits the community as well, providing a taste of different art forms and a close involvement with their creation.

On any given day, the Bothwell Arts Center is filled with artists coming together to further their art, give free rein to their vision, and support one another, providing a community for growing the arts in Livermore.

Bankhead Theater

Since it opened in 2007, the Bankhead Theater has welcomed a diverse range of artists and audiences, bringing them together to share the rich experience of live music and performance. The LVPAC Presents series includes more than 40 exceptional performances throughout the year. Music of all genres is presented, from authentic western swing and the Great American Songbook to classic rock, smooth jazz and world music, as well as dance, acrobatics, theater, and comedy. Together with performances by the Resident Companies, local community groups, and touring shows, events at the Bankhead engage, entertain, and inspire audiences of all ages.

Exposure to the performing arts has the potential to transform lives. Seeing, hearing and taking part in a performance can be exhilarating for children as they grow and develop, igniting their imagination and fueling creativity for the rest of their lives. LVPAC is dedicated to making the arts affordable and accessible; the season includes family-friendly shows and student and military tickets for all LVPAC Presents events are priced at just $17. In addition, educational outreach to local schools and other groups offer children special opportunities to get close to artists and the arts.

The Bankhead provides a rich environment for growth on both sides of the footlights. Performing in such an intimate venue benefits artists at all levels. The Grammy Award-winning vocal group Chanticleer has praised the Bankhead for its perfect acoustics, and artists seeking to make a transformation of their own have chosen to make it a stop on tour.

Whether seated in the darkened theater, waiting backstage for an entrance cue or enjoying a show outside on the Shea Homes stage, artists and audiences come together at the Bankhead Theater to share in the power of live performances.
